The top ranked public high school in Prince George’s County is Eleanor Roosevelt High School. The school is situated in the town of Greenbelt and has 2,764 students enrolled in grades 9 through 12. The school is a comprehensive one, but also houses a Science and Technology magnet school for students who excel in those areas. Entry into the magnet program is very competitive. The school has been awarded a Blue Ribbon Award of Excellence two times – which is very rare for any school in the USA. It was also the recipient of the 2002-2003 national Siemens Award for Advanced Placement. In 2009 it was ranked the 382nd best public high school in the USA by the prestigious Newsweek Magazine ratings. Students from the school mostly come from the surrounding areas of Greenbelt as well as some areas within the town of Lanham. Although the school is best known for it’s science and technology programs, it excels in all subject areas year after year. The course offerings are very diverse and are available at all academic levels. Some of the electives include Japanese, finance, and bioscience.
The school was named after Eleanor Roosevelt, one of the most revered women of her generation and wife of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1933).
Located in Greenbelt, Maryland, in the heart of the Baltimore-Washington corridor. Eleanor Roosevelt High School (ERHS) is one of the largest public schools in Maryland with approximately 3,000 students and 150 faculty and staff.
ERHS was recognized by the United States Department of Education as a Blue Ribbon School in 1991 and 1998. Roosevelt was also recognized by the Department of Education as a New American High School in 1999-2000. Roosevelt has also been awarded the 2002-2003 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement. In 2002 Eleanor Roosevelt was recognized as a National School of Character by the Character Education Partnership in Washington, D.C.
Roosevelt is also the Science and Technology Center for the northern part of Prince Georges County, and is a member of the National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools of Mathematics, Science, and Technology (NCSSSMST). Roosevelt has classes ranging from Japanese I, Child Development, and Television Productions to Bio-Organic Chemistry, Calculus, and a variety of Technology Courses. Roosevelt boasts eight Foreign Languages, and has a media center with over 25,000 books.
